BOOK REVIEW # 2015-117 - BEGINNER READER: Katie and the Roller Skates

This is the first book in the author’s first book in her beginner readers “Read-With-Me” series of books; it’s also the fourth book in collection of books I obtained through the giveaways Ms. Asselin had on LibraryThing. The following is my honest opinion.

Ms. Asselin has once again shown her knack in writing stories for her young readers which both entertain and educate them regarding important life lessons they need to learn, and doing it without hitting over the head talking down to them with these lessons.

In this book while Katie enjoys being with her grandmother, Nanny, but she doesn’t have any friends or other children her own age to play with.  One day Nany and her go to the park where she see other children all around enjoying themselves in small groups doing different activities. Katie sees a girl who reminds her of Carley, a friend she has at home who skating on only one skate. Katie wished she could skate as well.

After hearing an ice cream truck and getting their ice cream Katie asks Nanny if could get some for the little girl she saw skating alone on one skate. Her grandmother agrees and she goes back to the park to give this girl the ice cream.

Katie, after eating their ice cream, talking a little, and telling her how she didn’t know how to skate and would love to learn how. Gina, who was visiting her grandmother as well, got asked if they want like to be friends, they agreed.  With only one pair of skates Gina hold Katie to put on the second skate had so she could teach her how to twirl on only one skate.

By the end of the day, these two girls now had a friend and knew it would be their best summer ever.

The illustrations in the book are a delightful addition to help its young readers to visualize this story.  Since the author hasn’t stated who drew them, I have to assume she’s the illustrator for this book as well.

Making friends and sharing is an important lesson children need to learn and the younger they are, the better; which is why I’ve given Ms. Asselin 5 STARS for her endeavor here.

NOTE: If the spelling smells odd or a word seems out of place it’s because the author has used the Canadian/British spelling or usage of the word. This doesn’t afect book’s enjoyment.
